NBA Β· RULE 5

Basketball point
system

One, two or three: how the location and type of shot change its value.

Three scoring values.

NBA scoring
AttemptPoints if successful
Free throw1
Field goal on or inside the three-point line2
Field goal from beyond the three-point line3

A foot on the three-point line makes the attempt a two-pointer. Landing inside the line after releasing a legal three-point attempt does not by itself change the value.

Build a score.

Teaching example: two made three-pointers, three made two-pointers and four made free throws produce 6 + 6 + 4 = 16 points. This is arithmetic, not a player’s game record.

Points and made baskets are different totals.

For the same example, there are five made field goals and four made free throws. Keep the shot categories separate before calculating points; adding every made attempt as if it had equal value gives the wrong result.
