What to watch.
When a guard drives, watch the nearest big defender: stepping towards the ball can leave a teammate’s assignment open.
Avoid the shortcut.
Height alone is not the definition. Read the player’s job in the action: screen, receive, protect the rim or finish the rebound.
These are conventional roles, not five boxes every possession must fit. Use the positions overview to compare responsibilities across a lineup.
