A quick courtside reference.

Read the sequence, not one frozen frame.

Officials communicate several pieces of information: stopping play, identifying an infraction and explaining the restart or penalty. Watch what follows the first gesture. A raised arm during a shot and the later scoring signal answer different questions.

Try a replay exercise.

Pause a replay immediately after the whistle. Write down the gesture, then play the next few seconds and compare it with the restart. Use Appendix A for the complete illustrated signal set; this short reference covers selected common calls.
