Fast break
in basketball

Attack before the defence settles, without outrunning the decision.

  1. 01

    Possession first, pace second.

A fast break turns a change of possession into an early attack. The first useful pass, spacing and the runner’s route can matter as much as sprint speed. Running into the same lane makes the defence’s job easier.

  2. 02

    Read a two-on-one.

If the defender commits to the ball, a passing lane may open to the runner. If the defender stays with the runner, the ball handler may have a path to the basket. That choice changes while the players move; do not preselect a pass before seeing the defender.

  3. 03

    Add the defender gradually.

Practice variation: rehearse the pass and catch with two attackers, then introduce a controlled defender. Finish balanced. If the advantage disappears, keep possession and organise the offence instead of forcing a crowded shot.
