Passing
in basketball

Send the ball where a teammate can use it, at the moment they can use it.

  1. 01

Choose a route for the ball.

A chest pass takes a direct route, a bounce pass uses the floor, and an overhead pass releases above the head. The defender and the receiving angle matter more than choosing a favourite style for every situation.

  2. 02

    Pass, move, receive.

Original practice variation: two partners pass at a comfortable distance. After each pass, the receiver moves one step sideways and shows a new target. Keep the pass catchable before adding pace or a passive defender.

  3. 03

    A pass starts before release.

Look at the receiver, available space and the defender’s hands. Throwing harder cannot repair a closed passing lane. For the receiver, showing a target and meeting the ball makes the exchange easier.
