Basketball in
the Philippines

A short history through three documented milestones and the leagues fans follow.

  1. 1954

1954: a place on the world podium.

Carlos Loyzaga was part of the Philippine team that earned bronze at the 1954 World Championship. His FIBA Hall of Fame record connects that achievement with Asian Games gold medals in 1951, 1954, 1958 and 1962.

  2. 1975

    1975: the professional league opens.

The PBA’s first double-header took place on 9 April 1975. That date provides a useful anchor when reading accounts of Philippine professional basketball, distinct from the national team’s international history.

  3. 2023

2023: the Asian Games gold returns.

The Philippines beat Jordan 70–60 in the men’s final. A national-team medal is a different achievement from a club championship; keeping those competitions separate makes a historical record easier to follow.

Three routes into the story.

Follow the PBA for the professional club tradition, the MPBL for its city and provincial identity, and international player records for the national-team thread. These entry points describe different layers of the game rather than a ranking of which fans matter most.
